Want to know what’s covered in Teaching Old Dogs New Tricks?

Here’s the outline of the activities we are going to cover during the 16 weeks. You will see it is deliberately paced to be achievable without creating undue stress. Of course, this list is subject to change. When that happens, this page will be updated.

Week 1: Getting Started [Jan. 22]

1. Read this blog and find out about the program.

2. Register for a New York City library card, if you don’t have one already. You will use it later for downloading audio books in Mp3 format.

Week 2: Blogging [Jan. 29]

3. Set up your own blog and add your first post.

4. Register your blog with Pamela Brown and begin your Learning 2.0 journey. Use your blog to track your progress and experiences each week.

Week 3: The Learning Process [Feb. 5]

5. Discover a few pointers from lifelong learners and learn how to nurture your own learning process.

Week 4: Digital Photos [Feb. 12]

6. Take 2 digital photographs and save them either on your computer or a storage device that your computer can access. (You can do this even without a digital camera.)

Week 5: Social Networking through Photos [Feb. 19]

7. Register for an account at Flickr and learn about social networking through photos.

8. Upload your photos to Flickr and experiment with their editing tool, Picnik.

Week 6: Blog Your Progress with Photos [Feb. 26]

9. Upload your photos to your blog.

10.Record on your blog how you are doing on this journey. What has been a surprise for you?

Week 7: Catch-Up & Play Week [March 4]

11. Play with an image generator.

Week 8: Catch-Up Week [March 11]

12. Get caught up. If you need help, contact Pamela.

Week 9: Del.icio.us [March 18]

13. Explore social bookmarking at Del.icio.us.

14 .[Optional] Register for an account at Del.icio.us, experiment with tagging some web pages that you use frequently, and then search for pages other Del.icio.us users have tagged with the same words.

Week 10: RSS & Newsreaders [March 25]

15. Learn about RSS feeds.

16. Decide whether you want to experiment with RSS feeds through your browser or a news aggregator like Bloglines. If you choose Bloglines, set up your account.

17. Use Google to locate a few blogs and/or news feeds that interest you and subscribe to them.

Week 11: Clip Art & Images [April 1]

18. Explore the Microsoft clip art site and download an image. Upload it into your blog and write a post about your experience.

Week 12: Audiobooks and Digital Music [April 8]

19. Find an audiobook of interest at the New York City Public Library and listen to part of it.

20. Find some music on the web that interests you and listen to it on your computer.

Week 13: Video [April 15]

21. Discover YouTube. Find some videos that interest you, and incorporate one into your blog.

Week 14: Podcasts [April 22]

22. Discover some useful tools for locating podcasts and for subscribing to them. Listen to a podcast of your choice.

23. Blog how you are doing on this adventure.

Week 15: How did it go? [April 29]

24. Use your blog to summarize your experiences with Teaching Old Dogs New Tricks. Can old dogs really learn new tricks?

Week 16: Bonus Week (to catch up if you need it) [May 6]

    Am I correct in assuming that all of the different things we will be subscribing to will not be part of our email?

    Claire, I’m not quite sure what you are asking, so if this doesn’t satisfy, let me know.

    Initially there will be messages to the FCLS email list, but they will be only to promote this blog and remind people about the project. After a few weeks, messages on the FCLS list will drop off.

    Information about Old Dogs is self-contained in this blog. Anything on FCLS will be redundant.
